Hong Kong tenancy guide
Hong Kong Rent Receipts
Use a copyable rent receipt checklist. Separate rent from deposits, match bank transfers to rental periods and check tenancy-specific receipt requirements.
Quick answer
A rent receipt should identify the amount paid, payment date and rental period. Keep the recipient’s acknowledgement and payment evidence together. Deposit and rent are separate entries; a bank screenshot may not explain the purpose of a payment.
Check the tenancy category
The receipt requirements for applicable Part IV residential tenancies and Part IVA regulated tenancies differ. Do not apply the regulated-tenancy seven-day requirement to every arrangement. Follow the linked RVD and CLIC guidance for the actual tenancy.
Copyable receipt fields
This is a record framework, not a statutory form or a complete statement of every tenancy’s requirements.
Rent receipt Receipt reference: [reference] Premises and tenancy: [details] Landlord / authorised recipient: [name] Tenant: [name] Amount received and currency: [amount] Rental period: [start–end] Payment date and method: [details] Receipt acknowledgement: [details] Deposit / other charges: [separate entries]
Reconcile a combined payment
If HK$15,000 rent and HK$30,000 deposit are paid on the same day, distinguish the two amounts and the relevant rental period. This hypothetical example explains record keeping, not a universal contractual entitlement.
Missing or incorrect receipts
Ask the original recipient for a traceable correction or replacement. Preserve the earlier record and bank evidence; do not edit a document to make it appear the other party confirmed something they did not. Store each receipt with the related transfer and correspondence.
Compare the two checks
| Item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Transfer record | Shows details of a payment transaction. |
| Rent receipt | Confirms the purpose and rental period. |
Frequently asked questions
Can a transfer screenshot replace a receipt?
It can support payment evidence, but may omit the rental period, purpose or recipient’s acknowledgement.
Can rent and deposit appear on one document?
They should be separate, clearly identified entries rather than one amount labelled rent.
